Transportation FAQs: Getting Around Grand Cayman

Is there Uber in Grand Cayman?

No. Ride-sharing services such as Uber or Lyft do not operate on the island. Transportation is mainly provided by licensed taxis, rental cars, and the local bus network.

Visitors can also use the Island Go app, a local ride-hailing platform that connects passengers with licensed taxi drivers through a mobile app. Availability can vary depending on the time of day and location, but it offers a convenient option for booking rides without calling a taxi company.

How much is a taxi from the cruise port?

Taxi fares depend on distance and the number of passengers, but short rides from the port area to nearby beaches or attractions typically fall within the $20–$25 US range for a standard trip.

Prices are not metered. Drivers follow government-approved fare zones, so it’s common to confirm the total cost before starting the ride.

Are taxis easy to find at the cruise port?

Yes. When cruise ships are in port, licensed taxis are usually waiting directly outside the terminal area in George Town. After exiting the port, visitors can walk to the designated transportation area where drivers are available to take passengers to beaches, restaurants, and attractions around the island.

Taxis operate with government-regulated zone fares, so prices depend on the destination rather than a meter. It’s common practice to confirm the price with the driver before starting the ride.

Is there public transportation in Grand Cayman?

Yes. Public transportation is available through a network of minibuses that operate along the main roads connecting George Town, Seven Mile Beach, West Bay, and other parts of the island.

These buses are small vans rather than large city buses and are easy to recognize by the route number displayed on the front. The fare is $2.50 USD per person, making it one of the most affordable ways to get around.

Can you take a bus to Seven Mile Beach from the cruise port?

Yes, but buses do not pass directly through the cruise terminal. Visitors will need to walk a short distance into George Town to reach one of the main bus routes.

Once on the route heading toward West Bay, buses travel along the road that runs beside Seven Mile Beach, making it easy to get off near many public beach access points, hotels, and restaurants. It’s one of the most affordable ways to reach the beach, although buses do not operate on strict schedules.

Is it easy to get around without a car?

Yes, especially if you plan to stay near the main tourist areas. Taxis, minibuses, and short distances between attractions make it fairly simple to move around without driving.   However, if you want to explore more remote beaches or the eastern side of the island, renting a car usually provides the most convenience.

Can you rent a car near the cruise port?

Yes. Several car rental companies operate near the port area in George Town as well as at the airport. Many visitors choose to rent a car for the day if they want to explore multiple beaches or visit the eastern side of the island.

A valid driver’s license from your home country is usually sufficient for short visits, and vehicles drive on the left side of the road, similar to the United Kingdom.
